Federico Barbagli, PhD

Federico Barbagli is senior vice president and general manager of the endoluminal business unit, which includes the company’s Ion system for robotic access to the lung. In this role, Dr. Barbagli oversees the next phase of Ion growth, with continued focus on innovation, manufacturing scale and globalization, and the overall customer experience.

Since joining Intuitive in 2013, Barbagli has held several engineering and product development leadership positions where he has had an instrumental impact in designing and scaling our endoluminal products. Most recently, he held the role of vice president and general manager, endoluminal.

Before joining Intuitive, Barbagli was co-founder of Gantto, a developer of project planning software. He also held various roles at Hansen Medical, including chief technology officer, where he helped lead the development of one of the first robotically assisted catheter systems. Prior to that, he was assistant professor of robotics at the University of Siena.

Barbagli holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from the University of Bologna. He has a PhD in robotics from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. In addition, he completed postdoctoral work with the department of computer science at Stanford University and the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
