Ion catheter with fiber optic shape sensing for bronchoscopy

Shape-Sensing Technology

Providing precise location and shape information throughout navigation and biopsy1

The only bronchoscopy platform using shape sensing

Ion by Intuitive takes a novel approach to navigation with fiber optic shape-sensing technology. Embedded within Ion’s ultra-thin catheter, the shape sensor measures the full shape of the catheter hundreds of times per second,1 providing precise location, shape, and orientation information throughout the entire navigation and biopsy process.1 With shape sensing, Ion provides the precision and stability needed to reach and biopsy small nodules in the periphery of the lung.2

  1. Results based on internal testing. Data on file.
  2. Precision is the ability to place a biopsy tool in the desired location consistently. Flexibility is the ability to articulate 180° in all directions. Reach is defined by airway generation access. Stability is enabled by fiber optic sensing technology which maintains active robotic control of catheter position and corrects unwanted tip deflection.
